Special Housing Options

From UMassWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The Special Housing Options in the UMass housing system are special programs in specific dorms that an incoming resident can choose from.

Contents

[edit] Alcohol-free Residence Hall

The students living in Alcohol Free Residence Halls must agree not to possess or consume alcohol in their dorm, whether or not they are 21 years old. It is also possible that the consequences of being caught with alcohol are more severe in these dorms because of this agreement.

[edit] 24-Hour Quiet Floor

The students in a 24-Hour Quiet floor agree to keep all noise below a certain level at all times so that the residents can always study without interruption.

[edit] Nine-Month Residence Hall

Typical dorms at UMass must be vacated for Winter Vacation, Spring Break, and Thanksgiving. However, the 9-Month Dorms let you stay in your rooms through these vacations without returning your key, but it is slightly more expensive to live in these dorms. However, international or out-of-state students may find this option convenient.

[edit] Nontraditional Student Program

The Nontraditional Student floor in Crampton hall is for undergraduate students who are 23 or older, a "nontraditional age" for college.

[edit] Single-Sex Housing

There are two single-sex dorms on campus, both in the Northeast residential area. The all-male dorm is Hamlin and the all-female dorm is Johnson (beginning Fall 2008). (Knowlton used to be an all-female dorm, but has now become all-freshman.) However, there are single-sex floors in Southwest and Central, and most of the suites in Sylvan are single-sex.

[edit] Co-ed Suites

A program in MacNamara Hall allows returning students to request friends as suitemates of either sex. However, roommates in a double room must be of the same sex.

[edit] Gender-Free Housing

Gender-Free Housing was created for transgender students and their allies to avoid awkward roommate situations. Gender-Free Housing must be by special request through the Housing Office.

[edit] Thatcher Language Program

The Language Program in Northeast's Thatcher Hall allows students to practice their second language by creating an immersion program in the dorm. Residents of the French floor, for example, must demonstrate proficiency in French and speak French to their floormates. Living in this program counts as a two-credit conversation course. Students must be accepted into this program. More information on the Thatcher Language program Website.
