[edit] ONE MILLION!

Congrats! Kinda exciting, huh? :-) steph (COM) 11:30, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Yes, they have!

Thanks, Gordon, for noticing the great job students did with College Writing, Section 71. I am quite proud of them. :-) steph (COM) 12:57, 13 May 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Bad Behavior 2 Extended Functionality v0.1

Breaks on Mediawiki 1.10, and appears to be a function of PHP 5 changes. I fixed one problem, with wfQuery on line 65, by applying the same fix that took care of the main plugin, but now I get Fatal error: Call to undefined function wffetchrow() in /home/public_html/wiki/extensions/Bad-Behavior/bb2ext.php on line 68 - If you have PHP 5, you may want to take a peek. -- 64.81.227.206 10:32, 9 June 2007 (EDT)

Yes, somebody else has fixed it, I'll post the fix this weekend. Thanks! --GMorehou(talk) 14:53, 9 June 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Re: Move-In Day

hey, cool! thanks! --Katiej88 19:34, 17 July 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Class link added

Did I do it right? I'll start playing after you give me the go-ahead. :-) steph (COM) 16:28, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

[edit] internship

Let me check it out with the technology faculty and see if they're interested and, if so, how to proceed. I'm sure that there would be paperwork, and one of the real faculty would have to oversee/sign off on it. If they let me do it, they'd still have to sign off on me as I can't do it myself as just a TA. (Had an arrangement like that before, but it was created by a student's desire and persistence; this is the other way around.)

You're looking for a volunteer or paid? I don't know if that makes a difference - either in their interest or in terms of the rules for credit of this type. steph (COM) 10:38, 6 August 2007 (EDT)

I am going to follow up on this now....honest? I don't think it is likely, just because the faculty are maxxed, but I will give it my best shot. steph (COM) 12:37, 1 September 2007 (EDT)

[edit] update

The former Chair of the Communication Department responded, saying: "Interesting. Gordon or you should try to set something up with Jeff Silver in Field Experience, or at least discuss the possibilities; I'm not sure if there's any precedent for students to do an internship on campus. If it could work, a student would not have a hard time getting a faculty sponsor." Steph 12:37, 9 September 2007 (EDT)

[edit] pictues

I would be more than happy to take a bunch of pictures of buildings, etc around campus as soon as I get back to school. The only pictures I have right now, though, are of the Northeast area. :D —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Katiej88 (talkcontribs) .

[edit] escapee

Yes, indeed Writing Genres in Communication did escape and I couldn't find it again to tell you it is nukable. I noticed my error and created a duplicate inside the class-space. :-) steph (COM) 12:32, 1 September 2007 (EDT)

[edit] talk code?

[edit] it's adding an extra set of brackets

I don't see the closing brackets when I paste in the code, but if you look at what appears, you'll see that an extra (?) set of closing brackets is tacked onto the end of the entire line. [[User:Steph|Steph(talk)]] 23:25, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Actually, it seems to have moved the brackets from after the text for my user name |Steph to the end of the line of code. Because the brackets in the highlighting after Steph are gone.
I swear I must be cursed! This is what I typed in Steph(talk). Is this not correct? I swear it looks exactly the same to me: Steph(talk) but if I copy and past your code in here without the nowikis it comes out right! Steph(talk) I am confused. I must be overlooking something (for the thousandth time). [[User:Steph|Steph(talk)]] 23:42, 3 September 2007 (EDT)
Yessir on my honor I did a control a to select all, deleted, then typed in the code. I did make a goof but backspaced and fixed it. Maybe I cannot make a goof. The pressure is getting to me? Yes, I get the pretty message box that says "Your preferences have been saved." It's just my sanity that is going out the window . . . ! [edit] back to basics

And, it does not compute in my wee brain why, if I copy and paste YOUR code into this text the sig appears with that cute little talk supertext. But when I try to formalize it? sigh. Hopefully this really is not a hint of things to come! :-) Steph 08:46, 4 September 2007 (EDT)

YEEHAW! Time for a party!

[edit] MAJOR GOOF!

Holy cow. I just learned they reassigned my section (from 4 to 9) and then realized that I did not even get the semester correct for the new COM course! Can you change my class name from

Class:COM375 - Lecture 4 - Spring 2007 to Class:COM375 - Section 9 - Fall 2007

Please please I hope without losing or having to manually rebuild all the pages I already have created?

Thanks man. At least I got the year right! :-) [[User:GMorehou|SSteph(talk)]] 08:15, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Blast. So - there are internal page links I had already created under the "old" wrong class page name. How do I find them, now, so I can correct the links and retrieve that information? Steph 10:18, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

[edit] lost links

So, they were originally linked with the / to nest them in/under the Class Page. The ENG course is fine - all those links are still active, but the COM class is not.... there are a few I would really like to retrieve.  :-( It seems to me that if I search for the original Class Page Class:COM375 - Lecture 4 - Spring 2007/Homework (for instance) I would arrive to the page, but...did these get automatically erased when you edited the Class Page itself? Steph 22:36, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Sorry, I thought you would be able to tell from the red highlighting. I've been rebuilding one of them - Class:COM375_-_Section_9_-_Fall_2007#From_the_COM375_Instructor_Resource_Book, where the text reads "list of specific skills" - so now it links to a page (I'm dissatisfied, I'm sure the first list was better, but this was the easiest to do something about).
The second one is more important: Class:COM375_-_Section_9_-_Fall_2007#Homework, the red text "Be Prepared" lead to two days of homework assignments as well as the outline for in-class activities... [[User:Steph|SJKent(talk)]] 23:20, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

[edit] You are a GOD!

Thanks for finding my two lost pages. Yes - please move the original list (Class:COM375 - Lecture 4 - Spring 2007/Writing Skills Necessary for Communication Majors) and replace the shoddy one (Class:COM375 - Section 9 - Fall 2007/Writing Skills Necessary for Communication Majors) I just tossed together.

[edit] making mincemeat...?

new question (and I am still playing with variations of code for that blasted signature). I created an Steph/steph's user talk archive 13 page for my archives. The first section - which includes the links to previous talk page interactions with students and you - has bad links. [edit] Legend and lore

hmm. well... i havent heared a whole lot about different legends at umass... lets see...

 • some people think Mary Lyon is haunted, but i'm not sure on the full story.
 • i've heard that Arnold was name after someone named Arnold Hoar, but they used his first name because they didn't want to have a building called "Hoar House" (whorehouse).
 • I've definitely never heard about the phone stalker....

i think that's all i've heard so far, but i thought the Free State of Butterfield story was so funny I thought it might fit well into this category. Although I agree the whole article shouldnt be placed in this category. Maybe there should be a new page for the Free State of Butterfield, separate (but linked) from the Butterfield page. --Katiej88 04:20, 8 September 2007 (EDT)

[edit] wave of logins

Hi Gordon,

This Tuesday I'm going to have the ENG112 class sign in and create wiki logins. We always seem to run into a disaster or three, so I thought we might try and review what I need to tell them: in as concise and plain language as possible.

 1. Choose a username according to the amount of anonymity you want.
 2. Find your usertalk page. That's where you go to read "new messages" sent to you.
 3. Find Steph's usertalk page. This is where you go to send a message to her.
 4. Always always always "sign" your work! With four tildas: ~~~~
 5. ONLY create pages "in" our class space (unless you sign up with the WikiMaster for other, non-class related projects). ANY TIME you create a new page, include a backslash / as the first symbol in the url.

We will be working at a slower pace than in the past, as I want to get a student team set-up from the beginning and do not want them having to catch up with too much backlog. As always, open to any suggestions/feedback/advice/warnings/superlatives (!) etcetera that you may offer!

Nice feature in the Collegian, btw. :-) Steph 12:44, 9 September 2007 (EDT)

re "incoming" - I postponed until Thursday. Class meets from 4-5:15. That would be cool if it fits in your schedule to be "present" while this goes down.  :-) Thanks for the one pager, I'm printing that and will also include links to the two resources you mentioned, along with one a student in the first semester made that may be more accessible than your computerese. steph 12:27, 10 September 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Welcome Page and escapees

I only see one welcome page added to my students' pages so far? The only thing I had them do was post a message to me. I am starting much more slowly this time, easing them into it. (They're also doing blogs, so there's the additional layer of keeping the blog and wiki systems discrete.)

Meanwhile, you may bomb Due Dates and /Baseline Credit, I caught and fixed them (as in duplicated in the proper place). Sorry for goofing up. :-/ (That (talk) link is sure handy!) Steph(talk) 10:24, 15 September 2007 (EDT)

Good show and have fun! I'll be having the other class login between today and Thursday (as homework) ~ hopefully all will go smooooooooothly! Steph(talk) 10:21, 18 September 2007 (EDT)

[edit] performance

Hi Gordon,

The Wiki loaded v-e-r-y slowly yesterday, but we managed. Otherwise it's been fine.  :-) We've had a few edit conflicts but I assume they are inevitable. What's your sense? It seems I've done a better job of weaning them into it gradually and systematically so that the rash of errors has been reduced - is that accurate or does it only seem so from my point-of-view?

[edit] lost page

Hey Gordon,

I seem to have lost Class:ENG112 - Section 36 - Fall 2007/homework/Week Three.

I am not sure when it went missing.....I'm doing some editing to make it easier to search back through the lessons plans and just realized Week Three is no longer there. This is kindof a problem! Did I manage to delete it? Did someone else erase it?

I've also really been missing a restore function. Suppose I did delete it, and wanted to reinstitute it as it was. How do I call it "back into being" as it were?

[edit] Removed Reply

Hello GMorehou, I don't know if I upset your or something; but, why remove the text and add the url to the spam filter; if you weren't interested, a simple no would of been good enough. --24.86.0.48 15:49, 11 October 2007 (EDT)

Your original post looked at a casual glance to be automated spam, particularly since "UMassWiki" was spelled "UmAssWiki" which is the case on a few sites that try to auto-parse the domain name. I've been dealing with a botnet attack recently so I jumped the gun. Anyway, I'm taking the domain out of the spam filter in case somebody wants to link to it in the future, but I'm not interested in your services and I suggest you word your messages to look less automated, perhaps including your name. --GMorehou(talk) 16:03, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
 • Thanks for the reply, will try and do that in the future. --24.86.0.48 16:36, 11 October 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Course list

Hi Gordon, how's things? We're booking right along. :-) I've run into that same problem I had before where I create archives of the main course page and they show up on the course list. I just moved those pages to an embedded page, but it has not automatically removed the links from that list. Some of my students have been confused, not to mention the clutter. Can you get rid of them? thanks! Steph(talk) 06:33, 28 October 2007 (EDT)

[edit] misplaced page

Hi Gordon,

This page COM375 - Section 9 - Fall 2007/WikiQuiz/WikiQ3/Prelude Interpretations got tagged....I'm not sure why? It was created in the COM class awhile ago; now I'm linking to it from the ENG class...as far as I can tell the name for the page is correct: a subpage of COM375.

Steph(talk) 21:37, 11 November 2007 (EST)

[edit] finally fixed!

I didn't realize you'd responded (way back when), and just came across the necessary info. Done moved the offending sucker.

[edit] UMASSWiki Class ENG112

Hey-

I'm on the WikiTeam for the ENG112 class that uses UMASSWiki as a homepage. I have a couple problems with moving some pages around. The WikiTeam created this new page as our new homepage. It works perfectly and it's fine. However, the page needs to be moved to the Class:ENG112 - Section 36 - Fall 2007 link. The link I'm describing is the one that you can click to after clicking "UMASSWiki Classes" on the left hand nav bar. I cannot seem to move this particular page to that particular location. If you could help the WikiTeam out with this, that would be much appreciated.

Additionally, my TO was wondering if it is possible to place music into the Wiki. I know that it is possible to upload Vorbis .ogg files and I have tried to do that but I can't get that to work either. The new homepage that the Wikiteam created was designed with the idea in mind that the Marvin Gaye classic, "What's Goin' On?" would be playing when visitors opened up the page. It's not a big deal if it does not work but it would certainly be very cool and my TO is really adamant that such music is placed on the page if at all possible. Please hit me back with some sort of reply soon. Thanks.

Marco 16:52, 15 December 2007 (EST)

[edit] forum/chat etc

Hi Gordon,

I'll catch up on those additional misplaced pages. No, we didn't find another alternative for the powerpoint but it wasn't critical. (I'd like to fix it for the future, though, if possible.) I do know my students are trying to add music to their redesigned homepage - you got a message from one of them (Marco) a day or two ago. Any luck?

Yes, I think an integrated forum would be great. I did figure out a way to use blogs much more productively than I ever have before, which sidelined the wiki somewhat... is there a way I can check out the software before you invest in it? This spring I'll be teaching Small Group Communication. We'll do something wiki-ish, but I'm not sure what, yet. I know I'll be using blogs.

Then, in the summer, I'll teach online for Continuing Ed first semester, and there's a chance I'll also be teaching an online course for a university in Palestine. What I really want is to get them into some kind of combined space. Might that be possible, here?

Steph(talk) 20:03, 18 December 2007 (EST)

[edit] One More Thing

For whatever reason, the link to ENG112-Section 36 has disappeared from the UMASSWiki classes directory. Now there are only two links to older versions of the homepage (both of which should be there) but no link to the most current. This is the link that should be in the main directory in addition to the other two. Thanks for everything.

Marco 22:23, 18 December 2007 (EST)

[edit] You Fixed It

Whatever you did fixed the problem beautifully. Everything is back to the way it should be and was originally intended. Thanks. Marco 20:48, 19 December 2007 (EST)

[edit] bonus points and classes

Hey Gordon -

I'm finally starting to gear up for spring! :-) Yes, only one class this semester, and also (I forgot to mention before) a class this summer too (first summer session). Then the future of my teaching at UMass gets grey. :-/ A long-term strategy question is if - and if so, how - you might want to extend availability of the UMass wiki to classes I might teach other places...that would really set us into the public sphere!

I like the bonus points idea. I'm not sure how to do it (yet) with the Small Group Communication class...they'll have different goals than writing students, y'know? But I won't forget it.... they're going to have to come up with a theme for the Course Wiki Page, perhaps they can do some kind of tie-in with the rest of the Wiki. (It may not involve editing, but who knows, it could.) Steph(talk) 09:57, 12 January 2008 (EST)

[edit] at it again :-/

I created 3 pages that need to be blasted, please:

sorry! %-/ Steph(talk) 12:07, 24 January 2008 (EST)

Thanks. Err, by "deleting the old ones" you meant the misplaced pages from before, right? Not the whole entire courses? Ok - yeah, I *know* that's what you meant, but still - you gave me a little stutter in my heartrate!  :-o You'll do the re-arranging of current classes to archived classes, right? And make it so the new class does show up as an Active Class, right? Hehe, I'm quite looking forward to doing this yet again! Best o' luck to you, and them, and me and them, and all of us this semester! Steph(talk) 20:53, 24 January 2008 (EST)

[edit] Thanks for the welcome

I've moved my page out of the main namespace to a subpage of my userpage. I hope that was right.

Also, I'm not a member of whatever that class was, so I'm not sure why that link has been provided. Thanks for the help. --—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ashwati01 (talkcontribs) .

I noticed and copied, pasted in the right place (new link). Was just in too much of a hurry. sorry :-/

[edit] PREPARE YOURSELF!

Hi Gordon, how's things? I've kept the students away from the wiki this semseter - until NOW. So far it's just been me adding all kind of stuff but they are due to login and begin adding stuff prior to our class this Monday. The plan is they are supposed to create draft pages off of their own user page for starters, then in class Monday we'll start moving things around. Hopefully the supervision will minimize misplaced pages and other annoyances. I'm wondering - is there any chance you could come to class and be tech support/guide/advisor for the various ideas the students have? I know this is a way way way long shot, but if so I think it would be really cool for them to meet "the man behind the wiki."  :-)
