Van Meter is a co-ed residence hall located in the upper Central residential area. It once was the host to Van Meter Koffee Haus, a weekly open mic offered on Wednesday evenings in the basement. However, now that Van Meter has become an all freshman dorm, programs such as Koffee Haus have been limited. Each semester, a similar program entitled Roc Da Mic has been offered. Van Meter is the largest dorm on campus, even larger then the campus towers in Southwest, housing more then 800 students. Along with being one of the largest dorms Van Meter is also one of the oldest, having been built in 1957. It is located further up the hill then Orchard Hill, sharing a unique bond with Butterfield. The fact that Van Meter is the furthest up the hill and the original source of the UMass pride and spirit is often met with hostility when brought up in conversation with students from Orchard Hill and Southwest, who mistakenly believe they are better.
